POS System in business: Is the lifeblood of commerce

Local commerce in Cape Verde has experienced a new dynamic with the popularization of points of sale (POS). Currently, in Cape Verde, there are more than 10,418 POS terminals (source - SISP website), in establishments in the most varied branches of activity, with workers in the informal sector also benefiting from this new technology.

These are devices that allow customers to pay for goods and services when carrying out a transaction. A customer can have his receipt generated either on paper or electronically.

What is a POS?
A point of sale, or POS, is a device that retail customers use to process their transactions. In some businesses, the cash register has been replaced by POS terminals that process operations with debit and credit cards, as well as cash. This POS can either be a physical device in the store or even a cash point in a web-based store.
 
In Cape Verde, fixed-attended POS are used, which do not allow equipment to be moved, as well as mobile POS, to operate transactions anywhere within network coverage for mobile phones.
How to use a POS?
  • To purchase goods or services, the merchant first chooses one of the options in the “Customer Operations”menu and introduces the transaction amount;
  • The card is inserted into the POS machine where the data is read.
  • The customer enters the personal code (PIN);
  • After communication with SISP, the customer has informatioin on the POS screen about the success or failure of the operation;
  • In case of success, the equipment provides the receipt confirming the operation that can be printed on paper or sent by SMS to the customer’s mobile phone;
  • In the case of printing on paper, a copy is delivered to the customer and the other remains with the merchant.
Which cards are accepted at the POS?
Points of Sale (POS) in Cape Verde accept national and international cards.
It means that all cards made available by Caixa (Burkan Card, Verdeana Card, Visa Electron, Vinti4 Empresa Card, Visa Classic, Visa Gold, and Prepaid Plus Private and Business) can be used at any of the POS available in the country.
