The Treasury Bills or Government Bonds represent a claim on the state of Cape Verde. The State guarantees payment at maturity and, therefore, they are considered risk-free investments. The nominal value of Treasury bonds is CVE 10,000 (ten thousand Capeverdean Escudos).

 

 

Types of Securities or Bonds:

  

 

Treasury Bills

  • Short term securities issued for periods of 91 days, 182 days and 364 days
  • Interest is paid in advance.
  • At maturity, you are reimbursed for its face value

 

Government Bonds

  • Mid and long term securities issued for periods of 18 months, 36 months, 5 years, 10 years, etc.
  • Interest is paid later on and may be annual or bi-annual
  • At maturity, you are repaid for its face value plus the last installment of interest

 

Advantages:

  • Tax exempted;
  • Payment ensured at maturity date, which means that it is a safe investment;
  • The secondary market is more flexible than that of deposits in terms of investment. In the secondary market of Treasury Bills, for example, you can get virtually almost any term between 1 and 364 days;
